Learn more about the specialist services that Sanctuary Addiction & Alcohol Services offers to clients.
Primary Care is the first stage of an individual's treatment programme at Sanctuary Addiction and Alcohol Services and is a more intensive 12 week phase during which a structured timetable is in place. See the Primary Care Timetable.
In addition to the traditional group therapy and one to one counselling sessions, all clients participate in basic skills education and computer training courses, a programme of physical exercise, menu planning and healthy eating advice, holistic and complimentary therapies and attendance at smoking cessation groups (although there is no requirement to give up smoking during the treatment programme).
Clients also have access to local medical services and are encouraged to attend for a full health check at the time of their admission to the service, with support available to enable them to attend any further medical appointments that may be required. As many of our clients have pre-existing dental problems when they arrive, we also encourage them to access local NHS dental service providers.
This phase of Treatment has a planned duration of 12 weeks; however, some clients may find that they require an extension to this period. This will be negotiated between the service user, Care Manager and Keyworker.

Individual Treatment plans will be developed with each service user, and will be informed by the wider Care Plan developed with their Care Manager. Reviews will take place every six weeks throughout the treatment programme.
During a client’s first review, at a session usually attended by the client, Care Manager and keyworker, plans for moving on from Primary Care will be established. The option of remaining at Sanctuary Addiction and Alcohol Services for Secondary Care will be explored, as will alternative options. If it is decided that an individual would benefit from Secondary Care, an assessment at the Secondary unit will be arranged.
For clients who are returning to their area of origin, a planned process of resettlement will be implemented, including the development of support networks, access to suitable accommodation, risk management plans and contingency management.
